City Overview
A snapshot of Vaudreuil-Dorion's history, geography, and municipal government.
Geography
Vaudreuil-Dorion sits in the Montérégie region, on the south shore of the Lake of Two Mountains near the confluence of the St. Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers, roughly 30–40 minutes west of downtown Montreal. The city's territory is split into two non-contiguous sections: the main urban area to the east, and a smaller, more rural section to the west near Rigaud, separated by the towns of Saint-Lazare and Hudson.
History
The Seigneury of Vaudreuil was granted in 1702. Dorion later grew up around a stop on the Grand Trunk Railway ("Vaudreuil Station"), becoming an incorporated village in 1891. The neighbouring towns of Vaudreuil and Dorion eventually merged into a single city.
Verify with the City: The commonly cited merger date (March 16, 1994) comes from a secondary source (Wikipedia), not an official municipal history page fetched directly during this research pass. The City's own "History and Heritage" page should be checked for a precise, citable date.
Population
The City's own overview page states a population of approximately 46,423 residents across 73.1 km², describing Vaudreuil-Dorion as the 28th largest city in Quebec - but that figure isn't dated. The 2021 Canadian census recorded 43,268 residents, up 13.5% from 38,117 in 2016.
Verify with the City: The city-reported figure and the 2021 census figure don't match exactly, and the city figure has no stated date. Treat both as approximate, and check Statistics Canada directly for the most recent official census count.
