What needs a permit before you touch a shovel, and who to call.
Most construction, renovation, and property-modification work in Vaudreuil-Dorion - from a new fence to a pool - needs a permit from the Urban Planning Service before you start.
Who handles permits
Permits are managed by the City's Service de l'urbanisme, made up of the Division Urbanisme, the Division des permis et inspections, and the municipal patrol. You generally need an appointment to meet with an inspector.

Common work that requires a permit
Based on the City's permits page, a permit is generally required for:
- Tree removal
- Water use authorization (e.g. washing a house exterior or vehicle during restricted periods)
- Sheds, garages, and gazebos
- Above-ground and in-ground pools, and spas
- Patios and decks
- Fences
- Renovation, construction, or demolition work
- Irrigation systems
Governing bylaw
Permit and certificate requirements are set out in the City's Permits and Certificates Bylaw (no 1871), with the underlying zoning standards in the Zoning Bylaw (no 1872) - both re-adopted and in force since November 12, 2025, replacing the older Règlement no 1274.
