History

This site, on an island in Lac des Deux Montagnes, contains traces of Laurentian Archaic-period occupation dating back roughly 3,500 to 6,000 years, along with the remains of a Sulpician mission active from 1704 to 1727 - a stone church, a fort, burials, and traces of an Indigenous village - abandoned by 1727. Quebec classified it as a heritage site in 2015; 358 recovered artifacts are separately classified as heritage objects.

Why visit

It's the deepest layer of Vaudreuil-Dorion's history, predating the seigneurial-era buildings covered elsewhere on this site by centuries, and it shares its name with the modern Île-aux-Tourtes bridge nearby.
